Largest freshwater fish caught on rod and line

History Channel's MONSTER QUEST: GIANT FISH
Prompted me to write about the largest freshwater fish caught.

Sturgeon were plentiful in West Florida until they were hammered by gill nets into near oblivion in the 1930s, but we don’t remember hearing of a behemouth like this one which was caught recently at the mouth of Rainy River in Minnesota.

Four anglers took turns for six hours reeling in the 11-footer that weighed more than 1000 pounds.

A limited non-commercial take is allowed and stocks are making a slow comeback according to fishery managers. Florida is also nurturing a program to bring back the unusual fish famed more for its caviar though the meat is excellent too.

White sturgeon of this size are certainly not unprecedented. In fact, according to information on the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission website, the white sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish in North America. The article notes that they can grow to 20 feet (6.2 m) in length, weigh over 1500 pounds (680 kg) and live for over 100 years.

Hooked on Numbers...

I've noticed that many new anglers are always intimidated by the myrid array of fishing hooks with weird sizing numbering system... There is no clear history on how the current hook sizing came into existence. The measurements used today use a twofold numbering scheme that measures from the smallest hook to the largest hook. It depends on what species of fish your are targetting for. It also depends on the condition of the water and how the fishes are feeding at that moment.

Here's a chart showing you the measurement scale of the common bait hooks and recommendation based on species. (click for larger version)

Also there is a very useful sizing chart for those who wants to build their own lure.

Taimen

Taimen is a fierce predator that Mongolians call river wolf. They can live to about 50 years and they have a strike that will take your breath away. Picture yourself casting a mouse fly across a wonderful riffle. As your fly skitters across the surface, you can feel yourself leaning into the cast in anticipation of the impending strike. Then, it happens. The water erupts with a colossal head and mouth that demolishes your fly. In 2005, the biggest fish caught measured 58 inches

Frames!

Nowdays Designer Glasses have become a fashion accessory, with celebrities leading the way with think, with rimmed optical frames to Jackie O style sunglasses. Glass frames are great for enhancing the facial features and can be seen as a fashion statement.
But often designer glass frames comes at a cost and to be honest great frames should not be costing a bomb to own.
I've come across a cool site called ZenniOptical.com. They have stylish perscription glasses and you can order them online. The best part is that it cost is very low ..as low as $8 ! They maintain a huge selection of frames with single vision lens, sunsensor (potochromic)lens, tinted suglasses lens, bifocal lens and progressive lens. The Secret to Zenni’s Low Prices is that they sell only their own manufactured frames direct to the customer, with no middlemen and virtually no advertising budget

Kiasi Kiasu...fishing

Okay these terms describes some of the anglers you may find in Asia – specifically Singapore … we call them Kiasu Anglers.

KIASU(kee-ah-soo)Hokkien adjective literally meaning, "afraid of losing". A highly pejorative description beloved of Singaporeans. Possibly our defining national characteristic. The nearest English equivalent is "dog in a manger", though even that is pretty mild.

Kiasu anglers are often very uptight while fishing. It’s all about winning and coming in ahead of other angers. They have to have the first bite and won’t stop until they are convinced that they have the biggest catch.
It really takes the fun out of fishing. They will spend their time looking at other anglers to see if they are getting better bite rates… ogle at what others are doing differently and will want to follow suit.

Country Music

All throughout my teenage life I have been listening to Rock music and didn’t like country music. Only after I became a father and decided that loud music doesn’t help reduce the amount of stress I am getting from work, I began to really appreciate country music. I must say that most Country music production is extremely good in many ways. Country music touches me in the sense that it talks about the things close to our hearts and the things that really matters.
I chanced upon the site called Countrymusicperformers.com. It has a nicely designed layout with featured artist, new releases and the best part; news and gossips.
It also allows you to download country music ringtones directly to your mobile phone via thumbplay.
You can practically get anything you ever wanted about country music on this site. My favorites are the featured videos and the Top 10 listing. Also they cover all the latest country music news in Country Music News
You can also join forum discussions and talk about your favorite artists or albums.
