BANANA MONEY

The Japanese government-issued dollar was a form of currency issued by Imperial Japan during the Japanese occupation of Singapore, Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak, and Brunei between 1942 and 1945. The currency was also referred informally as banana money (Malay: duit pisang), named as such because of the motifs of banana trees on 10 dollar banknotes.

Following the fall of Singapore into the hands of Imperial Japan on February 15, 1942, the Japanese introduced new currencies as a replacement of those previously in use in the occupied territories of Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Brunei. The new currency in Malaya and Singapore were issued with the same value as the Malayan dollar, and first entered circulation in 1942. As with other currencies issued by Japan in occupied territories, local residents were forced to adopt this type of currency, while existing coins were allowed until a shortage of coins required the Japanese administration release issued notes for cents.

To supply the authorities with money whenever they required it, they simply printed more notes. This resulted in hyperinflation and a severe depreciation in value of the banana note. Moreover, counterfeiting was rampant due to its lack of a serial number on many notes. Increasing inflation coupled with Allied disruption of Japan's economy forced the Japanese administration to issue banknotes of larger denominations and increase the amount of money in circulation. Sharp drops in the currency's value and increased price of goods frequently occurred following a Japanese defeat in battle abroad.

After the surrender of Japan, the currency became entirely worthless, and to this day the Japanese government has refused to exchange these currencies. Some locals managed to escape poverty because they had hidden Straits dollars and Malayan dollars, the previous currencies before the Japanese invaded. Those with hidden stashes of the old dollars were thus able to use them the moment the British resumed control of Singapore and surrounding colonies, when they became valid again. A number of surviving banknotes were stamped as war souvenirs, while its use as printing paper for rudimentary calendars for 1946 was also recorded.

The present value of the currency as a collector's item remains mixed depending on their condition, the presence of serial numbers, the use of woven paper, and their use as specimens. Common notes lacking serial numbers are still worth below their printed value, while rarer versions are worth slightly over or several times their printed value. Notes stamped as war souvenirs are currently rare, while notes with 1946 calendar overprints fetch about RM3,000 (as of September 2006).

Ten dollar-sized leaflets with reprints the ten dollar note's obverse were also airdropped by British air forces during the Japanese occupation as a warning to the population on the potential worthlessness of the currency in an event the Japanese is defeated. Fear among the population of possessing the leaflet lead to the their rarity and present high value (at an estimated RM3,000 as of September 2006).

Be careful what you hook up. Aside from picking some vicious industrial garbage, you can bring to the surface some strange and unmentionable things. Most fishermen will happily brag about an extraordinary big fish (and we'll show plenty of those in this article). But sometimes the catch is so bizarre, that they'd rather try to forget it over a drink or two.

"Larger than life" (but hopefully still real) catches

We all know that the size of our largest catch is only limited to how wide we can stretch our arms, and how gullible your friends are. A picture would usually prove your story, if you don't mind occasional "this is Photoshop... I can tell by the pixels" comments:

Great Snakehead Size - World record is 9 pounds 13 ounces caught by Jean-Francois Helias in Thailand in 2006 They are the biggest of the snakeheads and grow to 66 pounds but none that big have been caught on rod and reel.

66 pounds = 29.937096420000003 ~ 30 kgs
Although none of these 30kgs toman has been caught by rod and line till date, but can you be certain that toman of such size dosen't exist?

Or to you, big fish only exist in your regular mekhong catfish pond?

I believe if we stuff growth hormones into snake heads they may one day grow to become .... a monster!

History Channel's MONSTER QUEST: GIANT FISH

Prompted me to write about the largest freshwater fish caught.

Sturgeon were plentiful in West Florida until they were hammered by gill nets into near oblivion in the 1930s, but we don’t remember hearing of a behemouth like this one which was caught recently at the mouth of Rainy River in Minnesota.

Four anglers took turns for six hours reeling in the 11-footer that weighed more than 1000 pounds.

A limited non-commercial take is allowed and stocks are making a slow comeback according to fishery managers. Florida is also nurturing a program to bring back the unusual fish famed more for its caviar though the meat is excellent too.

White sturgeon of this size are certainly not unprecedented. In fact, according to information on the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission website, the white sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish in North America. The article notes that they can grow to 20 feet (6.2 m) in length, weigh over 1500 pounds (680 kg) and live for over 100 years.

I've noticed that many new anglers are always intimidated by the myrid array of fishing hooks with weird sizing numbering system... There is no clear history on how the current hook sizing came into existence. The measurements used today use a twofold numbering scheme that measures from the smallest hook to the largest hook. It depends on what species of fish your are targetting for. It also depends on the condition of the water and how the fishes are feeding at that moment.

Kiasi Kiasu...fishing

Okay these terms describes some of the anglers you may find in Asia – specifically Singapore … we call them Kiasu Anglers.

KIASU(kee-ah-soo)Hokkien adjective literally meaning, "afraid of losing". A highly pejorative description beloved of Singaporeans. Possibly our defining national characteristic. The nearest English equivalent is "dog in a manger", though even that is pretty mild.

Kiasu anglers are often very uptight while fishing. It’s all about winning and coming in ahead of other angers. They have to have the first bite and won’t stop until they are convinced that they have the biggest catch.
It really takes the fun out of fishing. They will spend their time looking at other anglers to see if they are getting better bite rates… ogle at what others are doing differently and will want to follow suit.

For me, nothing is more dynamic and no sport with more evolving learning curve than the art of Fishing. In fishing, you will never seem to stop learning something new with every single fishing trip.
Fishing covers many changing variables and needs utmost skills to adapt and make use of the constantly changing conditions.
With every experience and techniques gained we have to be on the learning curve and change our tactics and strategies. That’s where the fun begins, the uncertainties faced and the strategizing starts.

Here we have talked a lot about general fishing but in particular Lure fishing and the actual action of lure casting is more an act of active hunting rather than passive fishing.
Many believe that baiting tend to have a higher change of landing a catch but I firmly believe now that a right lure in the hands of a good angler will definitely land a sizeable catch relative to baiting.
Ardent baiters will tend to disregard luring as they believe that luring is too tiring and “fishes don’t eat plastics”
I have thought about this seriously and have studied the advantage of luring.

First of all a lure being retrieved right displays an aggressive motion where the fish is at its comfort zone will tend to strike the lure as a defensive measure.
All animals especially predators tend to have their own territories. In luring we call them strike zones. And when we cast our lure into that area we are mimicking another fish invading the fish’s “zone” enticing an attack.
A lure imitates a baitfish and a hungry fish will strike
Even though at an area where there are sufficient bait fishes available .. certain lures imitate an injured or wounded baitfish which is relatively an easier meal for the fish.
Amidst the schools of bait fishes a lure will be singled out as a different animal/fish and anything that stands out from the crowd usually will be singled out and attacked first.

I read somewhere in a magazine that it’s a generally accepted statement that 10% of anglers catches 90% of the fish.
There are published research that indicates the professional lurers have certain abilities or traits.
They have the instinct or knowledge that allows them to locate the target fish through years of practice.
The ability to impart action to their lure when retrieved or trolled very slowly so as to stay within the fishes strike-zone for as long as they could. Instead of just whizzing by the fish.
To vary and change the lure retrieval speed and depth as often as required.

My color is better than yours!
Remember my statement that we need to keep an open mind with fishing? When it comes to choosing a lure ..many of us will decide on color but are often unsure of which to choose and will go with the one that looks “good”.
We need to keep learning and stay on the learning curve.

There is however a rule of the thumb.
Dark Day = Dark Color
Bright Day = Bright Color

I have also discovered that purple/black lures and spinners work well in all conditions.
Orange color tinted lure is also very effective all rounder.

What about dirty water – casually known as Teh Tarik (Milk Tea) here locally.
Obviously the fish needs to be very close to the lure to see it. Hence color doesn’t matter. We need to make use of two things- Noise and vibration.
Use lure with strong action – Chug bug works well.

Also like the Kranji reservoir, when the water is thick with sediment or algae, the oxygen concentration is far greater near the surface of the water so we need to start popping the poppers.
Many anglers tend to choose lures to match the bait fishes …but if there are plenty of bait fishes around why would the fish choose your lure then? I believe anything that stands out will have a higher chance of being attacked.
Have you ever seen people landing huge snakeheads using poppers that look like your son’s toy or a marker pen?

Many anglers I speak to go for lures with red under the gills and near the tail – bleeding and injured fish. Also as I mentioned before – orangy tint at the belly is good.
But with all these theories and suggestions … think like a fish and choose the lure you like. Don’t bother with one that irks you because most likely you are going to keep using the one you like.

Fire ant infestations

Sometimes referred to as "Red-Ants" they belong to a class of stinging ants with more than 280 species worldwide.

In Japan they are known as aka-kami-ari or Feuerameise in Germany. In the United states there are many species as well but the most serious pests include the 4 primary species within the Solenopsis genus. They are the Red Imported Fire Ant, the Black Imported Fire Ant, the Southern Fire Ant and those that are native to the US.

It is not easy to distinguish between the native and the imported fire ants and usually requires about 50 randomly collected worker ants to conduct a detailed study.

Why the worry? well, fire ants are well known for ther aggressive behaviour they swarm over any object or living thing that disturbs them often seen attacking wild animals, pets or even humans. Recently I decided to get a toaster oven and purchased the GE Halogen toaster oven. This neat little oven allows you to broil, bake, toast and even defrost. I have a choice of using it as a regular oven or a conventional mode. It's kind of spacious at about 12x11 oven cavity and the back actually bows out so it will hold a large 12 inch pizza pan. Controls:

Turning: Use the left and right arrow keys to turn.

Casting: Tap the up arrow key to begin your cast. When the distance meter has reached the desired distance, tap the up arrow key again. Be careful not to cast into the rocks!

Reeling: Use the down arrow to reel in your lure.

Hooking and Fighting Fish: Cast your lure near a fish to hook it. When the fish takes the lure, use the down arrow to bring it on to the boat. Keep the pressure on the fish to tire it out, but be careful not to put too much pressure on, or the line may snap (keep your eye on the drag pressure meter). I first discovered that running ads on my fishing site helped pay for coffee a year ago when I experimented with affiliates programs and that's pretty much I got for about 3 months.

When traffic to my sites increased I started to wonder if affiliate sales could be a great way to earn an income and hence started my attempt to monitize my blogs.

Within 3 months, the income from blogs grew and not only can I afford coffee but I could actually get a good fishing rods with the revenue generated from my blogs. Since then I have started evaluating different programs out there and my most recent one made me into a postie..

Those who are familiar enough with blog monetization would know that payperpost refer to bloggers as Posties.

PayPerPost(PPP) is a website which helps bloggers and other content publishers find advertisers willing to sponsor specific content. It's really a very simple concept.

What I like so far is the overall user interface. It's intuitive and easy to navigate around. The PPP site loads fast between pages and projects itself as clean and neat.

There are three major sections when you log in:

The blogger Dashboard which is the primary main page with summarized information

The Open Opportunities tab which lists oppotunities available if you when you meet the qualification criteria.

And finally the Account settings tab which shows you settings for tools, submitted blogs and posts.

To be honest, it all looks good. From other sites I get a mixed feel of PPP actually generating good income and thus offer myself to try this out. I am somewhat skeptical with many get rich quick schemes; PPP is not hence I am more than willing to give it a shot.

Please check back to see if this works for me in Gonefishing Journal and hopefully if this grows well it will create a win- win situation for advertisers and also help me get that prized Marlin Reel!

September 01 : Dinner... Home made Sukiyaki

Today decided to get my hands dirty and make dinner. Wifey and I went and got some groceries and some fresh seafood.

We made Tom yum Steamboat. For those who are unfamiliar with Tom yum :

Tom yum is a soup originating from Thailand. It is perhaps one of the most famous dishes in Thai cuisine.
Tom yum is characterized by its distinct hot and sour flavors, with fragrant herbs generously used. The basic broth is made of stock and fresh ingredients such as lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, shallots, lime juice, fish sauce, tamarind, and crushed chilis.

What's different here is that I am a chilli fan, and over here in Asia we have one of the hottest chili peppers around..called Chili Padi or Bird's Eye Chili Pepper. These tiny little fiery chilis point downward from the plant and their colors change directly from green to red. Although small in size compared to other types of chili, the chili padi is relatively strong at 50,000 to 100,000 on the Scoville pungency scale (Close to Habanero)

Was checking out the regular spot and just doing some light casting... it's an outlet canal where excess reservoir water is discharged into the sea. I had many bites and misses from the big school of garfishes around. However what caught my attention more was a couple of middle aged dudes doing "baitless fishing" what i refer to as opportunistic fishing....

You see, this morning was raining hard and the reservoir water had to be let out and when that happened large amount of water together with freshwater fishes were being discharged into the sea... the apparent high salinity stuns the freshwater fishes and they struggle on the water surface... they become weak and will eventually die from the inability to adapt to a sudden rise in the salinity index. These "uncles" are bringing in Kilograms worth of fishes without using any baits. How they do it is simple, they have a anchor like rig made up of hooks quite like the larger version of a squid jig.. they will spot any struggling fish being released from the reservoir and try to false-hook them up... one by one they got a wide variety of fishes... in a way this is good because they will consume these fishes that will die for sure if no one picks them up like they do...

Unintentionally I casted toward what i tought was a fish rise and just like them my lure snagged onto a struggling Peacock Bass...

Slender Suckerfish Echeneis naucrates Linnaeus or Remora

The Slender Suckerfish uses the sucking disc to attach to larger fishes, most commonly sharks and rays. But it has been seen attached to boats, marine mammals and even divers. This species is also seen free-swimming.
When attached to a large predator, the Slender Suckerfish eats food scraps from the feeding activity of its host. It is also known to eat parasites off the host's body.
The Slender Suckerfish has a widespread distribution in most tropical and some warm temperate marine waters.

How many of us hates it when we reel in weeds? it's troublesome and it usually messes with our baits.. there are wire weedless hooks out there ...but I'd like to feature a home made weedless.. you've got to experiment with the rubber tube length which is crucial because you dont wanna miss a fish. It should be soft and short enough to revel the hook tip at moderate pressure.

I'd also like to feature a quick and simple way to rig your leader it'll take you less than 30 seconds to tie the tracer/ leader.

The African Tiger Fish

First we head to Congo or Zaire River in Africa..

The Congo river basin covers a vast area of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This huge, often swampy depression has an average altitude of less than 400m, the lowest areas being located in the north western region near lakes Tumba and Maji Ndombe. The Congo is the second largest river in the world after the Amazon. With a length of 4700km its volume averages between 30 000 and 80 OOO m3/sec Upstream from Kinshasa the river broadens and at "the Pool of Kinshasa" reaches a width of 15km.

The African Tigerfish is big, powerful, and well armed, thus making it among the worlds most sought after gamefish. It lives in the open rivers and streams of central and northern Africa. The impression one gets from viewing these fish, is one of awe, terror, and mystery, not unlike the feeling of watching a Great White Shark.
These fish hunt in large packs, just as their South American counterparts, the piranhas do. Prey consist primarily of other fish, but just about anything alive can fall prey to the tigerfish. Like the piranha, prey is eaten away bite by bite. Because they have razor sharp knife-like teeth, and extremely strong jaw muscles, they are among the few fish that can turn the tables on prey the same size or larger than themselves. There are unverified reports of attacks on humans.

Candiru: Vampire Fish

The Candirú or Canero (Vandellia cirrhosa) is a freshwater fish belonging to the Catfish group. The species grows only to being one to two inches in length and four to six millimeters wide. It is shaped like an eel and is almost completely transparent, making it almost impossible to see in the water. A fast, powerful swimmer, the fish is smooth and slimy, with sharp teeth and backward-pointing spines on its gill. The Candiru is primarily found in the Amazon and Oranoco rivers and has a reputation among the natives as the most feared fish in its waters.

The Candirú has few natural enemies. They are feared throughout their geographic range and are given a worse reputation than the piranha.
The Candirú is found only in the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers of South America. They do not like the sunlight and tend to bury themselves in the sand and mud under logs and rocks in the river bottom.

Candirus primarily set up house inside larger fish, where they feast on the host's blood. They are attracted to nitrogen, which usually leads them to a gill chamber, but apparently they can't distinguish between one nitrogen-emitting orifice and another: They have been known to follow a stream of urine right to its source.

However the reason that the Candiru is most feared by humans is because it is the only vertebrate known to parasitize humans! The fish is said to be addicted to the taste and smell of human urine. Candirus parasitize humans, when they are skinny-dipping while urinating in the water. The candiru tastes the urine stream and follows it back to the human. It then swims up the urethra and lodges itself somewhere in the urinary tract with its spines. Blood is drawn, and the candiru gorges itself on the blood and body tissue, its body sometimes expanding due to the amount of blood consumed.

Pacu - The fish with Human-like teeth

Although it belongs in the piranha family, the pacu (Piaractus brachypomus) is not as agressive as its more notorious cousin. However, it has powerful dentition capable of causing serious bites. The danger does not deter the Amazonian fisherman who considers the pacu to be a tasty fish and will be able to fetch a high price at market for his catch. The commercial value of the pacu has led to its consideration as a candidate for aquaculture in the Amazon region.

When bait-fishing in pacu-stocked ponds, anglers in Malaysia are advised to use circle hooks, size 2 or larger, and braided leather rather than nylon leaders which are easily broken by the pacu's teeth. Since pond pacu often nibble at the bait before taking it, anglers should let them swim away with the bait. If the angler simply allows the line to tighten, the circle hook will slide to the side of the fish's mouth and embed its point there

As you all would probably know by now Gonefishing's Journal isn't only about fishing. I try to write about anything leading to or somewhat related to fishing. I was reading an article about writing therapy.
Yes, there are research findings that clearly indicate the benefits of writing about your feelings. Primarily, talking and writing about trauma.
Writing as therapy actually has an ancient history, a model was developed for research purposes by James Pennebaker, Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas. The method consists of several writing exercises with an emphasis on expressing one's emotions. It has been shown in numerous experiments conducted by him and his colleagues that this simple procedure leads to improvements in physical health.

I think writing is not merely "letting it all out" but a clever representation of your feelings through words. The better your feelings are represented the more therapeutic it is. In my blog community I have come across many great writers and one that really had my attention was Molly Crane. She's a 29 year old high school teacher working in Atlanta. The one statement that caught my attention was this - "The strongest human desire is the desire to live..."

Went to recce a spot today...wasnt feeling too well so it was quick... almost 30 mins to 1 hour..

Baited using dead prawns and got several small fishes ...

Well this trip we didn't get any bigges nor any respectable bites...

Current was still too strong .. even with a size 3 sinker the rigs were all over the place..

For the night fishing we used grey prawns as bait.. bite rate was almost zero.

In the morning we got some tambans baitfishes and started rigging cable cars...

there was one pull which ended up the entire bait fish missing except the head.

We had to leave before the weather turn too hot for us.. one bout of sunburn experience last week is good enough to steer us away from any form of heat sources.

We however got a mini-me Ang Jiam ...

Chain Jig?

I have yet to try this but it's definately coming under my "next DIY" project ... It also seems Groupers dig this jig! If you do try it ... let us know the effectiveness!

Here are a series of pictures I took in an arty angle.

These are two little fish I caught. The scropion fish (Family Scorpaenidae) hit my line 4 times in a row! The first image shows (Leiognathus splendens), common name: Slipmouths, Ponyfishes and Slimys.

Sold fresh at market. Small, sedentary fish, shoals in shallow coastal water. Feeds on invertebrates. Elongate oval compressed body with naked, bony ridges to dorsum of head. Conspicuous concave lower jaw profile produces pointed snout. Terminal mouth protractile and maxilla absent from external edge of mouth. Eyes relatively large. High lateral line closely concurrent to dorsum profile. Extended spinous front dorsal almost continuous to soft-rayed portion.

On the left that's another fish i got obviously CNR. Note how the baits were rigged.

This morning we had our usual breakfast .. Ah Chiang's Porridge.It's a popular Cantonese styled rice porridge with raw sliced fish - Sashimi Ala Cantonese.The fish used to make this raw-fish salad is Chirocentrus dorab otherwise known as Wolf-Herring or Ikan Parang here locally.

The fish is served sliced really thin due to the fact that they have really tiny bones which ran longitudinally down the length of the fish and it was really difficult to remove them. So by cutting it really thin, you only get a small mm pieces of bone which won't do too much damage.It's served fresh with sesame oil dressing, ginger and lots of red chilies.

Wolf Herrings occurs inshore, including brackish waters. They are voracious predators of small schooling fishes, e.g., herrings and anchovies.Feeds mainly on small fishes, but perhaps also crustaceans. Marketed fresh, frozen or dried and salted.

Fishing is about experimenting…

I’ve noticed many new anglers here in Singapore are taking angling too seriously as a start. No doubt there are a lot of science and techniques behind fishing but I feel we should be more flexible in our angling experience.

For example there are many new anglers trying to gather all the so called “Proven” rigs and try to match what others are using, which is great to get them started, but I think they should not be afraid to try something new for example play with gang hooks, three if you want. Use different lengths and colors of leaders, even change your bait presentation every now and then.

Once again there isn’t any hard and fast rule to fishing and the joy of fishing also comes from the ability to experiment and try something new all the time.

Also the approach to fishing as I see it is not only to aim for the biggest fish ever but to enjoy the process of angling. Even you may leave a trip empty handed (catch wise) but I am sure you have learnt something. So when fishing, think not about when will the hook-up be but look around, pay attention to bites, nature, the environment and learn as much as you can so you can be closer in step to the next successful big fish.

What if you forgot to bring your Boga-Grip along and you got a big one that you are gonna C&R?... would you ever know it's weight?
Even without the help of a scale like Boga we can estimate and calculate the weight and size of the fish using a formula:
L x G Squared / 800
L= Length (inches)
G= Girth (inches)
Will give a the fish's weight in lbs.
If you do not have a measuring tape you could include items like a dollar note or your feet in the photo for subsequent calculations.

Okay the "million dollar question"- where to fish?. Singapore is surrounded by water and I don't think we can run out of spots to fish. The problem is that many anglers lack patience. An overnight fishing trip at a location with nothing but "Ah Sengs" (intimate name given to the very common marine catfish that plague the waters) will send most impatient anglers asking for the reclusive "secret spot". This will be an open source sharing portal - if you know of any spots in Singapore that is not yet listed. Please send me a note (EMAIL) and I shall update the list for sharing. Fish are most active during 90-minute windows surrounding each of these four daily events; that's 45 minutes before and after these four daily points. If you have to choose between sunrise/set and moonrise/set, always go with the moon as the moon is the stronger influence. Hunters have always known that fish and game are most active at dawn and dusk--sunrise and sunset--but their activity surrounding moonrise and moonset is less noticeable because these events are likely to occur without effecting any change in the perceived light. The rise and set of a new moon is invisible anyway, and overcast weather often hides the moon. Without prior knowledge of setting and rising times, two of the best fishing times will be missed every day!

There is an increase in frequency of big fish catches during the peak moon phases of full and new moon. Specifically, a lot more big muskies, walleyes, and bass were taken right on the scheduled calendar day of both the full or new (dark) moon peak, and continued for a three to five day stretch afterwards. In other words, if the full moon peak is on June 10th, June 10 thru 15 have great potential for trophies.

English-Style Fish and Chips [Beer Batter]

Okay finally decided gonna make me an English Style Fish & Chips outta my Queenie sitting in my freezer from last week's BJT catch.

The Queenfish is an under-rated food fish, mainly because they are often caught in conjunction with Barramundi and Threadfin Salmon which are excellent food fish. Like all tropical fish, the quality of Queenfish is improved with immediate bleeding and placing in an ice brine slurry.

THE COOKING PROCESS

Cleaning and Marinating

First the fish was washed clean under running cold water. Using a sharp knife the fish was fillet and skinned.

Queenies have naturally firm and white skin ..skinning it was easy.

Then the two fillets were marinated in ANCHOR Beer, a pinch of salt, black pepper and some white vinegar.

The Hot Stuff

After an hour's marination the fillets were cut into about one and a half inch cubes dipped in batter and fried about about 3 mins each side. (for my batter recipie please see below)

The result...

The end result are chunks of English style fish and chips with beer batter ... absolutely delicious. The meat is tender despite the nature of Queenie's dry flesh possibly due to the beer batter locking all the juices inside....

The secret recipie

Ingredients

5 cups [1.25 L] vegetable oil
1 cup [250 mL] peanut oil
1 cup [140 g] flour
1/4 cup [60 mL] rice flour or cornstarch
1 egg
1 1/4 cups [310 mL] amber ale (Anchor gives best taste)
1 teaspoon [5 mL] salt
1/2 teaspoon [2.5 mL] white pepper

Preparation

Heat vegetable oil and peanut oil into a Dutch or large, sturdy saucepan at least twice as large as the measure of oil [12-cup / 3-L].
Into a large shallow bowl, whisk together flour and rice flour or cornstarch.
Into a clean bowl, beat together egg, amber ale, salt and white pepper, until smooth.
Slowly whisk egg mixture into flour mixture, until smooth.
Dip fish fillets, one at a time, into batter.
Deep-fry into batches into hot [375°F / 190°C] oil for 4 to 7 minutes, depending on size and thickness of fish.
Do not crowd fish into hot oil, or it will be soggy.
Using a long-handle slotted spoon or tongs, turn fish over as often as needed for an even frying.
Remove when golden brown.
Leave to drain onto paper toweling before serving

USR and GREEN KRANJI

Today went to two legal spots early in the morning.. in short- quick and light half day luring with 0 catch..BUT! with many interesting discoveries...read on to know more...

First - totally nothing exciting at USR .. apart from one tug at my minnow and one other guy fly fishing plus one dude fishing at the illegal breakwater area ..scurrying when rangers came.

Saw a nice cloud formation at USR

Proceeded to Kranji reservoir but was surprised when i saw the water ... so much algae that the entire water body look like one big GREEN TEA lake!

There are signs of Kop Kun Kaps ... and there is a gaping hole in the fence ...

First the water ...then the ecosystems... saw a dead belida ...inspected the fish and looks healthy, no apparent hook marks , couldn't find any injury ... well i would classify this as Unnatural death...

And for those who are familliar with reservoirs I took a snapshot of the reservoir CHERRIES ... well these are in fact apple snail eggs (Pomacea canaliculata).

POPPER UP FOR GRABS! (Up in the trees that is)
Saw this lure snagged up in the branches ... someone must have casted when the wind was strong and the Tree fish took the lure...

It's actually not that high ..my estimate is about 2.5 to 3Metres tops ... anyone with a long gaff can get it.. see who gets it!... if anyone managed to get the lure..do let me know and i can post a pic here..best if you have a CR to go along! For those who wanna go get it.. it's right about in front fo lamp post number err...5 or 6....Good luck!

Jetty Fishing

When on a jetty, try fanning your casts. Work close to the jetty then further out. If your at the tip of the jetty (12 o’clock) look for water being swept (concentrated) around the tip of it. The fish will always be at the 1 o’clock position if the current is sweeping the bait in the current from left to right. This would be another form of a rip. The jetty forms a point and the current from the shoreline to the tip of the jetty is being compressed around the tip. The bait gets swept along for the ride and the predators will be waiting for an easy meal.

Upper Seletar ...and my Lures

Here are some shots I took at Upper Seletar Reservoir (Legal area). Didn't bring my Digi cam hence took these with my camera phone... got nothing this trip but great sunset view...

These are my humble lures as a start. Tested the Yo-Zuri at UPR this evening and it remains a virgin.... There were almost 6-7 Lau's there doing live baiting ..catfish .. and one guy got a 1+ Metre Toman ..
The Storm Shad got for me two PB in Kranji in my earlier post.
Will continue to try the Yo-Zuri minnow because it looks really promising .. swims and shine real good...

Bedok Jetty

Night fishing at BJT .. was really quiet except this little critter - Brown Spotted Moray (actually it's more of a greenish spotted)
Took my "kelong sotong" Squid bait.. and gave a pretty good fight - poof goes my hope of a 4kg KBL.

After a "storm" in the middle of the night the morning (7-8am) yield pretty good catch... some freeding frenzy! My Surecatch stainless steel leader got sliced through by some unknown Being right after my rod bent like crazy ..bells ringging like no tomorrow...

Anyways landed a 2+KG , 20 inches long Talang/ Queenfish Scomberoides commersonianus (Lacepède)Carangidae.

Get this : Bait used - 2 weeks old Dead Tamban
Rig: Two Hook - Head (skull) and Tail

Got the fish at it's gills i guess that's causing the massive bleeding..

Sembawang Park

Headed out to Sembawang park for some Night fishing.
Did not get anything as i spent about 4 hours fishing... had two strong bites but no hook ups. Used live tamban - the biggie ripped the 10cm tamban off the hook in one snap. Also used Kelong sotong head. Anyways my best catch that night are these shots:

Kranji Dam CR

Kranji Dam is still a good place despite what everyone says.. see alot of surface activites of very obvious mama Tomans .. i didnt have that luck that day as i wen a little too late - about 8.30am
one bite and two PBs .. the spot i got the PB has many bites... spot is just to the right of the main entrance. Note that there are lots of weeds there but many fishes congregate there- just my observations

Anyway some history about Kranji reservoir areas:
Huge Oil Tanks set fire onto the sea.
Lieut. A. B. Watchorn, was an Australian Sapper officer of the 27th Brigade who was in charge of the blowing up of the oil depot at Kranji. The truck bringing the explosives came under shell fire, and itself blew up. Swiftly and silently, Watchorn and his sabotage squad set their explosives. The valves of the oil tanks in the yard were then opened so that the oil could run to waste. As the black torrent poured out the charges blew up and set it aflame.Flowing out into the Strait, it met the incoming tide, which carried it up the Kranji River into the slimy swamps where so many Japs were still stranded.
